The Problem It Solves
Scrap pricing has historically been one of the most opaque aspects of the recycling industry. Dealers without access to commodity market data are often forced to rely on phone calls to a single known buyer, gut feel, or outdated price lists, leaving significant value on the table. A study of dealer behaviour across South Asia and the UK found that as many as 60% of small-to-mid-sized scrap businesses lack real-time access to market pricing, leading to undervaluation of material and suboptimal selling decisions.
The ScrapTrade Price Calculator directly addresses this gap. By combining artificial intelligence with daily price feeds from the London Metal Exchange (LME), the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), and regional commodity indices, the tool brings institutional-grade market data to every dealer with a smartphone.
“Every scrap dealer deserves to know what their material is worth before they pick up the phone. The calculator changes the power dynamic. It puts the market in the hands of the seller, not just the buyer.” – ScrapTrade Product Team
How the Calculator Works
The ScrapTrade Scrap Price Calculator operates in three steps:
- Select your country from a list of 12 major scrap trading nations including the United Kingdom, India, the United States, Germany, Turkey, the UAE, Australia, China, Canada, South Korea, Bangladesh, and Japan — with correct local currency displayed automatically.
- Choose your scrap material from over 25 categories across ferrous metals (HMS 1 & 2, steel turnings, shavings, cast iron, stainless steel), non-ferrous metals (copper wire, copper millberry, aluminium extrusion, aluminium cans, brass, lead, zinc, nickel), and other categories including e-waste, plastics, and cardboard.
- Enter your weight in kilograms, tonnes, or pounds — and click Calculate. The AI engine retrieves current market-benchmarked prices and returns a complete price breakdown within seconds.
Results include price per kilogram, price per tonne, total estimated value for the entered quantity, a 7-day market trend indicator, a 30-day high-low price range visualisation, and an AI-generated market intelligence note specific to that material and country.
Technical Foundation
The calculator is built on Gemini, Google’s 3.1 Gemini AI model, which processes real-time market context and regional price benchmarks to generate accurate, localised price estimates. Prices are refreshed daily and benchmarked against:
- London Metal Exchange (LME) spot and forward prices for copper, aluminium, nickel, lead, and zinc
- SHFE (Shanghai Futures Exchange) prices for primary and secondary metals
- CFR Turkey and CFR India ferrous scrap import indices for steel grades
- Regional dealer network pricing data aggregated from ScrapTrade’s marketplace transactions
- Currency exchange rates updated in real time for accurate local currency conversion
The front-end interface features a live scrolling market ticker showing current prices for key material-country combinations, a mobile-first responsive design optimised for use from a scrap yard, and an industrial aesthetic purpose-built for the scrap trade community.
Materials Currently Supported
The calculator supports the following scrap categories at launch:
- Ferrous: Steel Turnings / Shavings, HMS 1, HMS 2, Shredded Steel, Cast Iron, Stainless Steel 304, Stainless Steel 316
- Non-Ferrous: Copper Wire (Bright & Shiny), Copper Pipe, Copper Millberry, Aluminium Extrusion, Aluminium Cans (UBC), Aluminium Sheet, Brass Yellow, Brass Red/Honey, Lead, Zinc, Nickel
- Other: Mixed E-Waste / PCBs, Hard Drives, Plastic HDPE, Cardboard / OCC
Additional materials and countries will be added on a rolling basis throughout 2026, with user requests prioritised in the product roadmap.
Free Access and Future Roadmap
The scrap price calculator is free to use with no registration required. ScrapTrade is committed to maintaining free access to the core price estimation functionality as part of its mission to democratise scrap market data for traders at every scale.
Upcoming features on the product roadmap include:
- Price alerts via SMS and email when a target material crosses a threshold price in a selected market
- Historical price charts showing 3-month and 12-month trends for each material and country
- Bulk calculation mode allowing dealers to value multiple material lots simultaneously
- API access for businesses wishing to integrate ScrapTrade price data into their own ERP or weighbridge systems
- Direct integration with ScrapTrade seller listings allowing dealers to post a listing at the calculated price in one click
